Insulating a house with steel siding. A second option for insulating a wall with no sheathing is to use spray foam. I am using special siding clamps that lets me do everything solo. Polyurethane foam has the added benefit of sealing air leaks but you shouldn t consider installing it directly against the back of the siding. In this video i am using lp smartside lap siding to side my house.
Brick is durable resists fire and pests requires little maintenance and has insulating properties. It will actually rub away from the siding and onto your hands or clothes if you brush up too close to it. Stucco is durable seamless and provides insulation against heat and noise. In certain climates and regions this is perfectly acceptable.
This makes the color become chalky. The only way to remedy this problem is to put a vinyl type coating over the steel to protect the finish. Spray foam comes in at a close second or maybe even first depending on the structure because it expands. If you live in a region where temperature swings or very prominent seasonal changes occur steel siding will work well.
Steel on its own isn t naturally insulative but the advantage is that steel siding can be very easily and inexpensively insulated during construction and or a re siding project. Like all metals steel siding tends to fade over time. Luckily insulated and non insulated vinyl siding are both the lowest maintenance siding products available on the market today reducing their lifetime costs compared to other products. Fiberglass is also one of the preferred materials for metal and steel buildings and homes.
While sidings like fiber cement and wood require regular scraping painting and caulking vinyl siding only requires an occasional cleaning with a standard. Combined with some type of radiant barrier insulation like radiantguard and you get the maximum level of energy efficiency. If you do decide to insulate the metal siding styrofoam insulation would be a valid type of insulation to consider. Stone can last for many decades doesn t rot or mold like wood and is fire resistant.
Spray foam especially closed cell spray foam will cling tenaciously to siding gluing everything together. In fact many people choose to have their building without any insulation due mostly to the costs and the particular environment where the building is situated.
